NEW SERIES: Back To School Recipes

I'm sure, unlike most people, I was quite lucky when it came to school dinners. I actually really enjoyed them!

I wouldn't say we had anything out of the ordinary but 17 years on, after leaving primary school I still think about my school dinner favorites on a regular basis. Is that odd?

So in true Back To School fashion, I'm going to be recreating some of my school dinner favourites and sharing them throughout the month of September, here on Who's That Girl?

First up, we have Chocolate Crunch!
Definitely one of my favourite school dinner desserts and one I've been craving for a few weeks so I just had to dust off my baking tin and attempt to recreate it!

425g Plain Flour
425g Self Raising Flour
375g Sugar
425g Melted Butter/Margarine
2 Eggs, beaten lightly
40g Cocoa Powder
1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract

For this recipe, you will need a 26cm x 38cm x 2.5cm baking tray.

Preheat your oven to 150c

In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, sugar and cocoa together. I would suggest using an electric whisk or stand mixer for this as the mixture can become quite hard to work with.

Add the melted butter/margarine and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients and add the lightly beaten eggs.

Continue mixing until all ingredients are combined.

Press the mixture, evenly into your lightly greased baking tin.

Brush the top of your chocolate crunch with a little water and sprinkle with some additional sugar. Granulated or Caster sugar is fine.

Bake in your preheated oven for at least 30 minutes. You can bake for slightly longer if you like your chocolate crunch a little more "crunchy".

Remove from oven and mark out your 24 pieces, before leaving to cool.

Now, enjoy a slice of chocolate crunch with a well-deserved cup of tea!

  1. Love this idea! I used to love school dinners in primary school as well. They had this proper thick, cheesy pizza and these chocolate ring donuts which I would move heaven and earth to have again!

    1. Ooh! I don't remember ever having pizza or donuts in our school dinner choices. Such a shame because I'm sure I would've loved them! x
